Te Oro Tapu is dedicated to the legacy of Paraire Huata, Ngāti Kahungunu who worked tirelessly to make positive differences for Māori across the motu, especially within the alcohol & other drugs, mental health, justice and social service sectors.
Listen to a ‘Spirit Sparkle’ sung by Paraire. Te Morehu Tuhua wrote this waiata ‘Ko Koe Te Ariki’, and gave permission for Paraire to record it.
It is within ritual and incantation that these attributes are found:
Wairua - spirituality
Waiata - the rhythm of life
Waiora - the wellbeing of life
These are the essence and vitality of the Māori people.
The name of Te Oro Tapu was given by Ngamaru Raerino (Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Arawa). The whaikī that forms the korowai of Te Oro Tapu was told to Ngamaru by his Uncle Teoti Te Rame Raerino (Ngāti Awa) and encapsulates the essence of whakaaro given by the ‘puna kōrero’, the many wisdom keepers who have shared their insights on wairua.
